Craig Fallon and Karina Bryant ensured Great Britain finished strongly in the 2005 World Judo Championships in Cairo, Egypt, by taking gold and silver medals on the final day of competition.Fallon capped a marvellous day of judo by winning the -60kgs crown, and becoming only the third ever British male World Champion alongside Neil Adams and Graeme Randall.
Bryant, meanwhile, took the women’s Openweight silver medal to add to her +78kgs silver, which she had gained on the opening day of competition.
The performances from Fallon and Bryant - both who wear Fighting Films’ judogis - meant that Great Britain placed a respectable sixth in the medal table.
In the -60kgs preliminaries Fallon was outstanding, winning all three contests by ippon, including a great turn and hold-down on the dangerous Japanese fighter Tatsuaki Egusa.
He was more cautious in the semi-finals against Salam Utarbayev (KAZ), winning from just a koka.
The European Champion Ludwig Paischer (AUT) awaited Fallon in the final. The Brit held off several threatening attacks from Paischer while scoring a yuko from tai-otoshi.
Bryant looked impressive in the +78kgs and Openweight categories, progressing to both finals.
China’s Wen Tong gave Bryant little chance in the +78kgs gold medal contest, pinning her for an early ippon.
The Openweight final was a different story altogether. Within seconds of the start Bryant chased her opponent - Japan’s Midon Shintani - to the ground and put on a strangle.
As Shintani attempted to circle out of it, Bryant switched into a hold.
Shintani was clearly shaken and spent nearly 30 seconds lying on the mat recovering.
Unfortunately Bryant surrendered the early lead soon after and was left chasing the fight.
With 20 seconds to go she pushed forward with some ashi-waza, which Shintani spectacularly countered for ippon.
"I am a bit gutted," Bryant said. "But generally I’m overwhelmed. "In the World Championships my results are still improving."
Bryant now has an incredible six World medals in her cabinet, and Fallon a gold and silver.
