British Judo fans turned out in mass for the fourth annual GB Judo World Cup on the 19th and 20th of September. This year the event was bigger and better than ever, as for the first time, both Women's and Men's judo was on display. Team GB didn't disappoint their fans as they topped the medal rostrum with 9 medals in total, including 4 golds. Kimberley Renicks started the ball rolling with gold in the U48kg category and both Sarah Clark and Sarah Adlington followed suit in the U63kg and O78kg categories respectively.

But beyond doubt, the highlight of the event was the U81kg category. Both British number one Euan Burton and number two, Tom Reed, blitzed through their sides of the draw to set up a tense final that had everyone in the arena on the edge of their seat. Both were on fire in their preliminary contests, with Reed strangling 2007 European champion, Salamu Mezhidov (RUS) in his opening contest and Burton beating tough competition in the form of Olympic bronze medallist Flavio Canto (BRA). In the final it was Burton who came out on top, throwing Reed with Ashi guruma in the final minute of the contest.

As usual the Fighting films team were at the NIA in force, filming all the action for a one hour highlight programme due to be broadcast on Sky Sports. We'll also produce a DVD with all the action from the event in the coming weeks.
