In the Mens +100kgs Shinchi Shinohara (JPN) is out to prove he is the top heavyweight in the world, but there's a hungry new young Russian on the block, and his name is Alexander Mikhaline. Germany's 1996 Olympic champion Udo Quelmalz fights his last contest before retirement whilst captaining Inglostadt. Their opponents are the 1996 finalists Kenamju of th Netherlands, a team which feature the Van der Geest brothers and is captained by European Champion Ben Sonnermans.

At -60kgs Ryusi Sonada (JPN), the 1993 champion, faces a new challenge from the unknown Russian Ojjequine, as well as the Georgian Terrier Georgi Vazagachvili.

The Mens OPen features David Douillet (FRA) attempting the double of +95kgs and OPen against tremendous opposition, Moreno (CUB), Shinohara (JPN) and Kossorotoc (RUS). Can he join Yamashita and Ogawa as on the the all time greats of Judo?

The 1991 World Champion, Sergei Kossorotov from Russia, returns to magnificent form in an exciting clash with Frank Moller (GER). Pavel Nastula (POL) defends his -95kgs title in a category packed with formidable Judo men like World Champions Stephane Traineau of France and Antal Kovacs of Hungary, Britain's Ray Stevens, Russia's Dimitri Sergueev and the new boy on the block, Pedro Soares from Portugal.

Ulla Werbrouck (BEL) produces textbook techniques in the - 72kgs, whilst Kate Howey (GBR), uses powerhouse moves. The experience of Emmauella Pierantozzi (ITA) in the -66kgs and Diane Bell (GBR) in the -61kgs sees them through to dramatic finals. At -86kgs Vincent Carabetta (FRA) and Oleg Maltsev (RUS) produce another classic match, and Ryan Birch (GBR) struggles to defend his -78kgs title against Patrick Reiter (AUT), Djamel Bouras (FRA) and Johan Laats (BEL).

But the climax of the tournament is undoubtably the maginificent battle in the final of the -60kgs between Britian's "pitbull" Nigel Donohue and the "Georgian terrier" Georgi Vazagachvili, both looking for thier first European title.

At the 1989 World Championships Great Britain's Karen Briggs regained her under 48kgs World title, beating Japan's Funiko Esaki in the final. In 1990 Esaki travelled to Britain, part of a strong Japanese women's squad, to fight Briggs on her home ground.
At the same time a powerful French squad, including their new men's heavyweight find David Douillet, came to London's Cristal Palace to fight the cream of British Judo.
