At the 1989 World Championships Great Britain's Karen Briggs regained her under 48kgs World title, beating Japan's Funiko Esaki in the final. In 1990 Esaki travelled to Britain, part of a strong Japanese women's squad, to fight Briggs on her home ground.
At the same time a powerful French squad, including their new men's heavyweight find David Douillet, came to London's Cristal Palace to fight the cream of British Judo. Among the British players were the young prospects Ian Freeman and the junior World Champion Kate Howey as well as established competitors like Elvis Gordon the superheavyweight, World Champion Sharon Rendle and the stylish Ray Stevens.
